Would he try to spank her one of these days? Let him try. She

pressed two fingers to her curving lips. Cate was quite certain now that he feared marriage, and her.

Good Lord, he was awkward as a baited bear this evening.

Perhaps she’d hit the mark with her arrow, and his loyalty to her

father made it difficult for him to think of her as a bedmate after all these years of guarding and scolding her.

Catherine stood a while in the chill night, mulling over her latest problem. Lance Collyer thought he didn’t want a wife except for her bridal purse. He thought her a foolish child, or a demon from Hell, but she would prove him wrong. Her heart throbbed hard and hectic from

a deep scar created by repetitive friction over time. Was it possible that this decade-long battle between them had worn its way into

something more than shallow fancy and wicked lust?

Love sometimes grows slowly, Meg had said to her. I fear you will overlook something good and plain, right under your nose, while you’re so busy gazing up at the Heavens, not watching your own two feet!

Glancing through the ivy-framed window, she watched her

husband cross the hall with his long, purposeful stride.

He took everything far too seriously, just as she told him. He

thought every problem through like a long, dreary mathematical sum

and was not given to flights of fancy. He might claim not to want her, but she did not believe it. Tonight, at last, he had looked at her, really looked at her, and she had read something in his eyes. Something

new, tentative, warm.

Now what to do about him? How to help him overcome his fears

and set aside his long-ingrained rules?

Lancelot Collyer stuck to his rules as if they were the Lord’s

commandments. Once, when she was fourteen, she found a little

leather-bound book he kept full of lists, things to be done and when to do them. Her name, she’d noted at the time with indignation, was

nowhere on the neatly penned lists, not even as a reminder that she needed a spanking. Like most of his ilk, she thought with a heavy

sigh, he probably feared devoting himself to one woman in case it

made him less of a man and caused him to grow old.

All she need do was persuade him that she could be a blessing in

his life, not a curse. They were stuck in this marriage now—they may as well make the most of it.

He would resist, of course. He always said women were best kept

for temporary enjoyment. It would be a long, uphill battle in snow, wind and hail.

But she’d just have to woo her husband.

A new mission for The Shrew, one loaded with peril. It might be

the last mission she ever undertook, but she would do so for him.

Someone had to tame that man for his own good, didn’t they?

Captain Elliot suddenly appeared under the arch, looking for her.

“My Lady Catherine,” he called out, “may we finish our dance now? I thought your father’s trained bear would take off my head if I

followed you out here.
